The New National Theatre, Tokyo (NNTT) is Japan's premiere centre for opera, ballet, contemporary dance and drama. It is located in the Shinjuku area of Tokyo. Inaugurated in 1997 it has been praised for its architecture and state-of-the-art modern theatre facilities, which are considered among the best in the world. The opera house is part of Tokyo Opera City, a forty-five-storey high skyscraper. The lower floors of this skyscraper are occupied by various cultural venues apart from the NNTT: a museum of contemporary art and a symphonic concert hall. The predominant use of wood in the house creates a feeling of intimacy and was built according to the theories of psychoacoustics. This theory claims that the public hears better if it feels good in a room. Come test this theory for yourself with a performance on one of the NNTT’s three stages: the Opera House, the Playhouse and The Pit. The Theatre continually delights its audiences with world-class performances of both local and international artists.
